How to Upgrade Your Kitchen Island

A plain, builder-grade kitchen island is such a missed opportunity! It’s the focal point of the kitchen, so why not give it the character and custom detail it deserves?

I recently decided to transform my own kitchen island to level up the texture and make sure the side cabinets lined up flush with the main island body. With a few trusty tools, custom paneling, and fresh trim, this project completely transformed the entire heart of our home.

If you’re ready to give your kitchen island a high-end, custom look on a DIY budget, here is the complete step-by-step breakdown! Here’s the videos as well.

Shop it all here: You can find the materials I used on my Lowe’s Storefront. (Please note that these are affiliate links, and I earn a small commission when you make a purchase through them. Your support is greatly appreciated!)

Tools and Materials You’ll Need:

  • Tools
    • Miter Saw & Jigsaw (Jigsaws are super user-friendly and not scary at all for beginners!)
    • Brad Nailer
    • Kreg Pocket Hole Jig (Optional, but super fun to use!)
    • Contour / Profile Gauge (To trace around any corbels or unique trim cuts)
    • Pry Bar
    • 220-Grit Sandpaper
    • Caulk Gun
  • Materials
    • Wall paneling (Measure your island dimensions first)
    • 2×2 lumber boards (For the framing structure)
    • Chair rail moulding
    • 1×6 boards (For baseboards, optional if you’re keeping your baseboards)
    • Electrical outlet extenders

Step 1: Demo & Prep

First things first: remove the old builder-grade trim and baseboards (baseboard removal is optional ) from the island using a pry bar. Taking everything down to a clean slate gives you the best foundation for a seamless, professional finish.

Step 2: Build the Frame Extensions

To bring the side cabinets flush with the rest of the island, add 2×2 boards where the original trim used to be.

  • Pro Tip: I used my Kreg Pocket Hole Jig to secure these, but you can totally bypass that step! Just cut your vertical 2×2 pieces to match the length from the bottom of the countertop to the floor, measure and cut your horizontal bottom pieces, and brad nail them into place.
  • Nail into the spots where the builder previously nailed the original trim—this guarantees your nails won’t go through into the inside of your cabinets!

Step 3: Add paneling and extend outlets

Measure the faces of your island and cut your decorative paneling to fit.

  • Lowe’s Hack: If you don’t want to haul huge sheets of paneling home, bring your exact measurements to Lowe’s! They will cut the panels down for you right in the store so they fit easily into your car.
  • When you add paneling and trim, your electrical outlets will sit recessed behind the new panel. Install simple outlet extenders so your electrical outlets sit completely flush with the new paneling face.

If your island has corbels, use a contour profile gauge to trace the exact curve of the corbel onto your paneling. Then, use a jigsaw to follow your line. If you’re new to power tools, don’t be intimidated—a jigsaw is super easy to maneuver!

Good to Know: If you want to keep your existing baseboards, you can skip removing them! Most decorative paneling is thin enough to fit flush against baseboards as small as $1/4.

Step 4: Install the Baseboards & Moulding

I wanted a bolder, more modern profile, so I replaced my baseboards with clean 1×6 boards.

  1. Cut and nail your 1×6 baseboards across the bottom of the paneling.
  2. Add a chair rail moulding right along the top edge directly beneath the countertop to frame the paneling beautifully.

Step 5: Caulk, Sand & Paint

The magic is always in the finish work!

  • Caulk & Fill: Caulk all the seams where the trim meets the paneling and countertop. Fill your nail holes with wood filler.
  • Sand Smooth: Sand down all your seams and nail holes once dry. Pay extra attention to the corners to get them completely smooth—no corner guards needed!
  • Paint: Finish it off with a fresh coat of paint. I used Bunny Tail Blossoms by STAINMASTER®, and the soft, elevated shade brought the whole look together.

The Finished Look

This project completely elevates the kitchen, adding warmth, structure, and custom character without requiring a full remodel.
